• The estate threshold is only £300,000 for the year 2007/2008 and inheritance tax is due at 40% of the figure above this.
   
• The government has recently announced changes to allow the use of a double allowance for married couples. This can also apply if there is a deceased spouse and none or only part of the inheritance tax allowance was used at the first death.
